The NI GPIB-140A (part number: 777997-01, 777977-02, 777977-03, 777977-04, 777977-05 and 777977-06) is a GPIB bus extender. The device easily eliminates cable length and device load related limitations imposed by the IEEE 488 standard. The GPIB-140A is fully compatible with IEEE 488.1 and IEEE 488.2 standards. According to the IEEE 488 standard, the total length of any GPIB system cannot exceed 20 m. A pair of GPIB extenders can achieve a total distance of 1 km without any modification and without compromising the integrity of the user's GPIB system.
The GPIB extender can support up to 1 km of cable. The NI GPIB-140A uses buffered transmission technology, making this model one of the fastest GPIB bus extenders available today. With this model, users can achieve speeds of more than 2.8 MB when running under the HS488 protocol. The GPIB extender can be deployed effortlessly and requires no additional hardware. In a typical scenario, one end of a computer device is connected to a cable extender. At the far end, the GPIB instrument is connected to a similar cable extender. The two cable extenders are then interconnected via a fiber optic cable.
Each NI GPIB-140A continuously monitors GPIB activity and converts GPIB signals into parallel or serial signals for transmission to the receive extender. The receive extender receives a serial or parallel signal from the transmit extender and converts it into an IEEE 488 signal. The NI GPIB-140A does not require modifications to existing software applications because it is software-transparent.
